ADPAI: Cedric Nunn – unScene

In 2024, I curated a retrospective of acclaimed documentary photographer Cedric Nunn to coincide with the launch of the African Documentary Photography Archive Initiative (ADPAI). The exhibition invited viewers to engage with Nunn’s photographs relationally — connecting past and present, and revealing images as sites of solidarity, resilience, fugitivity, and struggle across race, class, gender, and geography.

Over the past four decades, Nunn has built a practice that documents South Africa’s social and political landscapes, creating an invaluable visual record of the country’s history. unScene was shown at the Satellite Gallery, Durban University of Technology, and was accompanied by the official launch of the ADPAI project.

The show formed part of a broader archival project to safeguard Nunn’s vulnerable negatives — digitising and cataloguing his extensive body of work to ensure accessibility for future generations of scholars, researchers, and the public.
