SowetoUprisings dot com. was a digital project that traced the various routes taken by students from different schools in Soweto on June 16, 1976. By spatially locating personal testimonies and narratives, and identifying landmarks significant to individuals, the project aimed to illuminate the complexity and multiplicity of the day’s events. Using innovative online mapping tools, it made the research accessible to a broad public and provided a platform for contribution. Designed with usability in mind, the project prioritised an intuitive interface that sought to address barriers to technology access in historically disadvantaged contexts. More than a static archive, it actively worked to challenge dominant interpretations and offered a counterpoint to the mainstream tendency to reduce the uprisings to a singular narrative.
